Spencer Gilbert, also known as Mar, is a painter and a native of California. Mar draws from a myriad of experiences and influences in his artwork. The “fire flower” pattern he uses is a fixed motif in much of his artwork, and originated from his own imagination. He believes in the symbolic abilities of color and creates narratives for them in each of his pieces. He uses the quantity of the “fire flowers” to create tension, he says, “the bigger the shapes are, the calmer it is. If there’s 500 of them in one painting it feels a lot more aggressive and chaotic.” Much of Mar’s work is on the streets, however he is also commissioned to do walls and some of his paintings have seen great commercial success.
